Theories from the book "Olmetecs: The Lost Civilization" by Dr. Jose Melendez (1978, ITC Academic Press)
Were did the Olmetecs originate?
The Olmetec civilization predates the Maya civilization in Belize. Based on the stories of the Maya, the Olmetecs were viewed as mystical or godlike beings. Hence, they are identified as part of Mayan myth by most scholars.
The Olmetecs were in fact very real. They were a nomadic group that migrated into what is current day Belize and settled around 5000 BC. They were of a similar genetic stock to the later arriving Maya. The "mystic abilities" attributed to the Olmetecs by the Maya are just manifestations of paranormal abilities.
The Olmetecs were the first civilization composed almost entirely of paranormals.
Why is there no "real" evidence of the Olmetec civilization?
Olmetec civilization has been found, it is the basis of Maya civilization.
The Maya being nomads had not developed the basics of civilization; writing, mathematics, farming and architecture were unknown to them. When they moved into "the land of the gods," the Maya were taught the ways of a civilized people by the Olmetecs. Thus when the Olmetecs left on their "journey of enlightenment", the Maya took their place and the time known by scholars as the Pre-Classical Mayan period began.
Where did the Olmetecs go?
The stories of the Maya indicate that the Olmetecs took a "journey of enlightenment." A trial that would determine the fate of the world, once the journey was complete, then so too would the cycle be complete and the Olmetecs would return home.
The Olmetecs through use of their paranormal abilities sensed a great threat to the "world." Seeking to protect both the "world" and their Maya pupils, the Olmetecs left the Earth to meet the threat on "its own turf."
Epilogue:
The book has become one of the all time best-sellers since the Olmetecs' return.
