Story: Ryan Drake was born on February 2, 1914 to Willard and Emily Drake.

Ryan was in trouble throughout his youth but straighten his life out when he met Officer Thomas Flanagan.

Flanagan got Ryan involved with the Police Youth League. Ryan studied boxing and physical fitness. When he turned 20, Officer Flanagan got Ryan a job with the Chicago Police Department. Ryan was with the Chicago PD for six years. He was a good officer and was credited with several important arrests including catching the killer of his mentor, Officer Thomas Flanagan. Ryan resigned from the Chicago PD and enlisted in the U.S. Army on the morning of December 8, 1941.

After basic training, Ryan was transferred to the Ranger Battalion. Ryan quickly made Corporal and made Sergeant a little over a year later. He survived the D-Day Invasion in which many of his fellow Rangers died. After the surrender of Germany, Ryan was a member of the Allied Occupation Force until his retirement in December 1946.

After leaving the army, Ryan moved to New York City and got a job with the New York Police Department. He had a 20-year career with the NYPD before retiring to work for Reynolds Security Services as a private security consultant. Ryan retired after working ten years for Reynolds.

In 1980, Ryan was coaxed out of retirement to serve as a special advisor to the Goldstar Foundation. He spent ten years with the Goldstar Foundation before taking a job as a security consultant for Concord Technologies.

At Concord Technologies, Ryan setup and organized a small security team based on the model he had created for the Goldstar Foundation. His time at Concord Technologies was marked by two tragedies. The first was the loss of a research facility and the government contract that the facility was working on when the facility was attacked by Factor. The second was the murder of Michael Hendricks, Sr. by Factor. Ryan wished to retire after the death of Michael Hendricks, Sr. but at the bequest of Michael Hendricks, Jr. he stayed. Ryan recruited more security agents and organized a low-powered paranormal team to supplement the security team. He retired after spending eight years with the company.

Two months after his retirement from Concord Technologies, at the request of Elizabeth Radley-Gold, Ryan took an advisory position with the Christopher Owen Radley Foundation.

Ryan has never married but discovered many years after the fact that a tryst he had during the war with an Irish lass by the name Erin O’Neill had produced a son, Thomas Sean O’Neill

Paranormal Community: Ryan Drake turned 90 on February 2, 2004. He does not look a day over 40. There is no doubt in the public mind that Ryan Drake is a paranormal. His youthful vitality is not his only paranormal talent. Ryan won a charity weightlifting event in 1981 by pressing 2201 pounds over his head, one pound more than Challenger of the New Americans. When asked at the time if he was more than a "special security advisor" to the Goldstar Foundation, Ryan answered, "you never know."

In the aftermath of the Black Arion Arises incident, Ryan Drake along with his son, TSO, and several other paranormals established a new Radley-Gold group in New York City. The new team took the name Goldstar Crusaders as a tribute to the previous two groups that had operated in New York City. Ryan has served as the leader of the group since its inception.

Paranormal Community - Secrets: Ryan was seventeen when he noticed that he was different. He could lift weights that the other boys at the gym struggled with. Ryan didn’t feel it when the other guy’s punched him when he was in the boxing ring. He told Officer Flanagan about his abilities. Flanagan told him that he was blessed and must use his abilities to help others. Flanagan continued Ryan’s training and taught him about police procedures.

After joining the Chicago PD, Ryan worked with Flanagan helping clean up the bad elements in the neighborhood. Flanagan insisted that Ryan never take the law into his own hands. Just bring in the bad guys and little the courts do their job. Ryan promised Flanagan. His oath was put to the test when Flanagan was killed. Rumor on the street had it that Nicky Salvatore had killed Flanagan. When Ryan found where Salvatore was hiding, he donned a mask to hide his identity and proceeded to beat Salvatore to death. As he looked down on Salvatore’s battered form prepared to deliver the deathblow, Ryan remembered his promised to Flanagan. Salvatore lived to face charges for the murder of Thomas Flanagan. Ryan never again used his special abilities to fight crime in Chicago.

Ryan’s near invulnerability saved his life several times during his time in the army. From time to time he would use his strength to save his and his squad’s lives. But when he used his abilities, Ryan was very discreet.

The Steel identity was born when Ryan returned to the States after the war and joined the NYPD. Steel became a bane to the criminals of New York City. He faced off against paranormal foes as well and stopped several plots by the Grand Empire. Steel was a founding member of the Crusaders. He was the only member of the group that survived the destruction of Professor von Kaylon’s Island.

When Nick Gold was setting up the foundation to sponsor the successors to the Crusaders, he wanted Steel to lead the new group. Ryan told Nick that Steel had died with the Crusaders and declined the offer to lead the new group. He offered to act as an advisor for the newly formed group so that he could pass on his extensive knowledge of the paranormal arena.

Ryan has remained true to his word and has not donned the Steel identity since the deaths of the other Crusaders.
