Gold, Nick

Born: 8/25/1958   Location: New York City, New York
Died: 9/11/2001   Location: New York City, New York

Story: Nick was found on the doorstep of the Mercy Street Orphanage on August 25, 1958 with a note that said, "Please take care of little Nick." An orphanage worker with a sense of humor gave Nick the last name of Ward as he was a 'ward' of the state.

Nick was a rebellious child and even worse as a teen. He ran away from the orphanage when he was fourteen. Nick supported himself by picking pockets, purse snatching and shoplifting. He also ran numbers and carried drugs for the older dealers.

Then his life changed while he was making a delivery for Big Tony. Nick stepped off the curb without looking and was hit by a delivery van coming round the corner. Nick felt pain, then agony and then nothing. He was in a coma; an agonizing half-sleep tormented by nightmares from his short and miserable life. Nick knew he had died and gone to hell.

The doctors looked on with concern; everything they tried only seemed to make the patient worse. He was not going to make it so they removed the IV drips and waited for the end. Suddenly, the pain was gone. Nick woke up and startled the nurse. She rushed out of the room to get a doctor. While she was gone, Nick slipped out of his room and down the fire exit stairs. Nick wandered the streets in a hospital gown, hiding every time a police car passed. He was in a daze trying to decide what to do when he looked up and saw the Radley Foundation office. Nick took it as a sign. He walked in, volunteered his services and then passed out.

Nick woke to find himself in a strange bed. It was not a hospital bed or a jail cell. He found that he was in the care of Elizabeth Radley-Gold. She listened to him tell about his life and misdeeds. She told Nick that he reminded her of her son and that it was fate that had brought him to her.

She petitioned the court for custody of Nick and after it was granted, she turned him in for his crimes. Elizabeth told Nick that he must make amends for his past transgressions. The court was lenient with Nick, sentencing him to 2000 hours of community service. Nick went to work for the Radley Foundation.

Soon after going to work for the Radley Foundation, Nick met his new big brother, Joshua. They hit it off from the start and Nick began training with Joshua. One day their karate workout got a bit intense, Joshua hit Nick a little too hard breaking his cheekbone and jaw. The pain was intense and then it was gone. His cheekbone and jaw were fine; it was as if the blow had never happened. After the surprise wore off, Joshua told Nick that he was Goldstar and offered Nick the chance to be his partner. Nick adopted the identity of Golden Boy. Golden Boy partnered with Goldstar for two years then he was retired, so Nick could go to college.

Nick attended Brown University. He majored in business administration and earned his Master of Business Administration degree in only four years. Several days after graduation, Nick’s world was shattered. Goldstar had died with most of the other Crusaders while raiding the island of Professor von Kaylon.

Nick took some money and headed to Barbados. After several weeks of drinking, he found himself laying facedown in an alleyway. There beside him was a very ill man, Mathias Black. Nick helped Mathias regain his health and Mathias helped Nick regain his good spirits. Nick and Mathias shared their secrets while they stayed in Barbados for several more months before heading back to New York City.

Paranormal Community: Nick talked with his mother, Elizabeth, and decided that a group must be formed to fill the void left by the death of the Crusaders. He contacted Steel and tried to convince him to lead the new group. Steel declined but recommended Ryan Drake as a special advisor for the group. Nick and Mathias decided to name the group, Team: Goldstar and with the help of the Radley Foundation arranged for the funding of the Goldstar Foundation.

Nick and Mathias were jogging in Central Park when Valeria Peralta and Nicola Verik almost literally fell into their laps. Bloodhawk and Hussar were pursuing Valeria and Nicola. Nick aided Valeria in fighting off the pursuers, while Mathias attended to the wounded Nicola. Nick and Valeria won the field and Mathias’ efforts saved Nicola’s life but he was paralyzed from the waist down. Nick and Mathias took Nicola and Valeria back to Nick’s apartment. After some fervent discussion, Valeria joined the proto Team: Goldstar group. Nicola became Team: Goldstar’s first staff member.

A few months before the official debut of Team: Goldstar, Nick was surprised to read about reports of a crime fighter running around in what the reports called a female version of the Golden Boy costume. Nick, Mathias and Valeria decided to investigate. A couple of days later they encountered Angel Minh Gold. She told Nick that Goldstar was her father. After some investigation, her story was found to be true. Angel was welcomed into the Gold family as well as Team: Goldstar.

Nick was the leader of Team: Goldstar since the group's founding in 1982. He took a two-year break from the crime-fighting scene in 1990 to marry and honeymoon with his new wife, Valeria Peralta Gold. During his absence Angel Gold and Mathias led Team: Goldstar.

After founding Team: Goldstar, Nick did very little to hide the fact that he was a paranormal. Several books have been written about Nick, Elizabeth Radley-Gold, Angel and Goldstar. Nick is very active in the administration of both the Goldstar and Radley Foundations.

Nick Gold and the other members of Team: Goldstar perished in the collapse of the World Trade Center during the Black Arion Arises incident.
